PEDv Resources

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) was first found in the United Stated in April 2013 and is considered a transboundary disease.  Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) may be defined as those epidemic diseases which are highly contagious or transmissible and have the potential for very rapid spread, irrespective of national borders, causing serious socio-economic and possibly public health consequences.   PEDv is not a zoonotic disease, it does not infect people, and is not a food safety concern.

PEDv was first identified in 1971 in Great Britain and in 1982 became endemic in Asia.  PEDv introduction into a negative herd typically results in severe diarrhea, vomiting and high morbidity and mortality in suckling pigs.  Sows will also develop diarrhea, vomiting with moderate morbidity; however, sow mortality is low.  PEDv has a 24 to 48 hour incubation period and immunity develops in 14-21 days.  Sows that develop immunity will pass antibodies through the colostrum to the suckling pigs.  When this occurs the suckling pig mortality declines.

PEDv can be diagnosed on clinical signs, fecal PCR, oral fluids PCR during an acute outbreak.  Two to Three weeks post outbreak IFA and ELISA can be run to detect antibodies to PEDv.  If you suspect clinical signs associated with PEDv contact your veterinarian to develop a diagnostics and herd health management plan.
